Dr. Fredirick Lazaro Mashili, a medical doctor and renowned researcher in exercise and nutrition physiology. He currently works In the Department of Physiology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), and a Research Officer at the East African Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular Sciences. With a PhD from the prestigious Karolinska Institute in Sweden and post-doctoral experience in public health, as a Bernard Lown scholar at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, Dr. Mashili has become an authority in the field of nutrition physiology and public health.
Dr. Mashili has been the Principal Investigator of two pivotal studies related to trans fatty acids (TFA). The first study, which was the first of its kind in Tanzania, focused on the assessment of TFA levels in popular edible oils and foods. The second study aimed to map the partially hydrogenated oils (PHO)market in selected countries within the East African Community and Ethiopia. Already findings from the two studies are being used to spur policy action towards the elimination of industrially produced TFA in East Africa and Ethiopia.
Additionally, Dr. Mashili has made significant contributions to the prevention of diet and lifestyle-related diseases, serving as a member of various technical working groups. With several peer-reviewed scientific papers and policy documents to his name, Dr. Mashili is a well-respected and active academician in the fields of physiology and public health.
